A Historic Crossroads

The Initiative: Why We Convene

On the 50th anniversary of the Vaddukoddai Resolution, the Tamil nation stands at a decisive moment. The forms of our struggle have evolved across five decades – from federal demands, to democratic mandates, to armed resistance, to international advocacy. But our core aspiration has never changed: securing permanent safety, rights and self-determination for the Tamil people on the island of Sri Lanka.

This Global Tamil Conference brings together what has been too often divided: homeland political leadership, civil society wisdom and diaspora strength – unified in purpose, informed by international expertise and committed to democratic consensus.

Our Rights

Tamil Self-Determination Through Meaningful Autonomy

We begin from fundamental truths that have been repeatedly affirmed by our people.

We Are a Nation

Tamils are a distinct nation by virtue of our language, culture, heritage and history of independent existence. This was declared at Vaddukoddai in 1976 and affirmed by overwhelming democratic mandate in 1977. It was reaffirmed in the Thimphu Principles of 1985 and in the Pongu Tamil uprising of 2001. It remains the foundation of any just political solution.

We Have a Homeland

The Northern and Eastern provinces constitute the traditional Tamil homeland - our ancestral territory, our cultural heartland and our self-determining unit. Recognition of this identified homeland is non-negotiable.

We Possess the Right to Self-Determination

International law is clear: nations possess the inherent right to determine their political, economic, social and cultural future. For the Tamil nation, after seven decades of systematic oppression, genocide, and broken promises, this right is not theoretical - it is existential.

Our Vision

Tamils' Future

We begin from fundamental truths that have been repeatedly affirmed by our people.

Tamils to steer their own destiny

History has taught us that promises without guarantees are worthless. Constitutional protections without enforcement mechanisms are empty. Any framework must include international guarantees and accountability structures to ensure agreements cannot be abandoned, diluted, or ignored.

We Demand Permanent Security

For prosperity in the island

Why Now

The Urgency of This Moment

The Cost of Fragmentation

When our voices are divided, our enemies are empowered. Multiple competing frameworks confuse international allies. Fragmented leadership allows Colombo to play divide-and-conquer politics. United, we are a nation. Divided, we are merely a problem to be managed.

The Window of Opportunity

Global attention to post-conflict justice, self determination and democratic governance creates space for serious engagement. International actors increasingly recognise that Sri Lanka's endless crisis stems from its refusal to address Tamil political aspirations. We must present them with a credible, unified alternative.

Our Responsibility to Future Generations

What legacy do we leave? More broken promises? Another generation of exile and occupation? Or do we do the hard work of building consensus, crafting a framework that can endure and demand international guarantees that make betrayal impossible?
